Keeping Kitty Cool

You’ve probably noticed that our feline pals love to lounge about in the sun. One would almost think that Fluffy runs on solar power! However, while your kitty may enjoy charging her ‘catteries’ by napping in sunny spots, that doesn’t mean heat is always safe for her. In fact, overheating is a serious threat to cats at this time of year! Here, a local Farmers Branch, TX vet discusses keeping your cat cool.

Water

The best way for Fluffy to stay cool when it’s hot is really just to drink lots of water. If you have a large house or more than one furball, you may need to set out multiple water stations. It’s worth noting that some cats prefer to drink running water. Your pet may really enjoy a kitty fountain!

Keep Kitty In

Cats are always safer and healthier staying indoors. This goes double in extreme conditions! Keep Fluffy safe and sound indoors.

Cold Snacks

You can drop an ice cube or two into Fluffy’s dishes on sweltering days. Or, just give her one or two. Don’t be surprised if she bats them around. Kitties use their paw pads to control their temperature, so this is actually a good way for your furball to cool off.

Cool Bed

Cats don’t mind ‘borrowing’ our beds, chairs, and sofas. However, Fluffy will appreciate a cool, comfy bed to doze off in. You can make your furry buddy her own kitty hammock bed just by attacking a piece of fabric to the legs of a table or chair. Another option is to point a fan at Fluffy’s bed.

Brushing

Brushing your feline friend regularly will remove dead fur and dander from her coat, which will help her stay cooler. This is also a great way to spend time with Fluffy, and make her feel a bit pampered!

Free Reign

If there’s one thing cats are good at—aside from napping and looking cute—it’s making themselves comfortable. If you let your pet roam around, she’ll instinctively find the coolest spots. This may be on a tile floor, as tile doesn’t usually get too hot. Of course, Fluffy may very well sprawl out where she’s right in the middle of the way, but that’s another topic.
