Senior Dog Care

Is your dog entering his golden years? It can be a bit of a shock to realize that your pet is a senior. It may seem like just yesterday that your canine pal was a playful, frisky ball of zoom! As Fido ages, he’ll still be the same loyal, lovable pooch as always, but he will benefit from some extra TLC. A Farmers Branch, TX vet discusses senior dog care below.

Bedding

One of the best things you can do for Fido is give him a comfy bed. Your furry friend won’t sleep very comfortably on a thin pad, or on the floor! Orthopedic beds are great options, because they offer great support.

Veterinary Care

Your dog may need to come in more often as he ages. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule. Call us right away if you notice any signs of sickness, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite.

Food

Fido won’t be as active as he once was, which can make it easy for him to gain weight. Obesity will not only increase your furry pal’s risk of developing some very dangerous medical issues, it will also put additional strain on his bones and joints. Keep your pup at or near his ideal weight, and don’t go overboard with treats. Ask your vet for tips, including when to make the change to senior-formula pet food.

Activity

It’s normal for dogs to slow down with age. However, Fido will still need regular activity, even if it’s just a daily walk. Swimming is also a good option, assuming your pooch enjoys it. Just be careful not to overexert your canine companion! Ask your vet for specific advice.

Doggy Comforts

Making small adjustments will help keep your four-legged friend comfortable. Elevated bowls, for instance, will be easier for Fido to eat from than bowls on the floor. You may also want to get pet ramps or stairs to help your pooch get around.

Love

Believe it or not, Fido may become even more adorable as he grows older. Senior dogs often develop a super sweet, affectionate temperament that is just adorable. Spend lots of time with your furry best friend, and make sure he feels loved and safe. That cute tail will still work just fine!
