Tips for Bathing Your Bird

Do you have a birdbath in your yard? This is a great way to help local bird populations stay hydrated and clean, especially in those hot summer months. Of course, pet birds also need regular baths. In this article, a local Farmers Branch, TX vet discusses giving Polly a bath.

Try Different Things

There are actually several different ways to bathe birds. You can put a shallow bowl of water or a mounted birdbath in Polly’s cage. This is a good option for smaller birds, like canaries. For larger birds, you can bathe them in a sink, or even install a perch in your shower. Your vet can make recommendations based on your specific pet. You may also find that your feathered buddy has her own preferences!

Check The Water Temperature

Make sure that the water isn’t too hot or too cold. A good way to test this is to put a few drops on your wrist, as you would with milk or formula for a baby.

Keep The Water Shallow

Birds can drown in just a few inches of water. Make sure Polly’s bathwater is shallow enough to be safe. An inch or two is plenty for most birds. Remember to clean your cute pet’s bathtub before and after she uses it.

Don’t Soak Polly

You should never let your bird get completely soaked. Polly can get very uncomfortable and frightened if she is soaking wet! Plus, she can easily get too cold.

Avoid Using Soap

Never use soap on your winged friend. This can strip the oils from her feathers. Plain, filtered water is usually all you need. If your little buddy gets something spilled on her, ask your vet for advice.

Time It Right

Birds can get chilly very easily when they are wet. You’ll want to bathe Polly during the warmer part of the day. In summer, you may need to turn your air conditioner off for a bit.

Let Polly Air Dry

Never towel-dry your pet. Instead, put Polly in a warm, sunny spot, and let her air dry. Once the water has evaporated from her feathers, she’ll probably start preening herself. Give her a toy or treat before returning her to her cage.
