Keeping Your Cat Healthy

February is National Cat Health Month! Of course, keeping our feline pals healthy is always important. Kitties have a reputation for being independent, but in actuality, they are very small and vulnerable. A local Farmers Branch, TX vet discusses keeping cats healthy below.

Good Food

Nutrition is one of the cornerstones of any good pet care routine. Offer Fluffy a high-quality, life-stage food. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard. If your kitty becomes obese, she’ll face some very serious health risks, such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis, to name just a few.

Clean Litterbox

Dirty litterboxes can stink up a whole room, or even a whole house. They also harbor dangerous germs and bacteria. Keep your cat’s powder room nice and clean.

Doctor’s Visits

Given the choice, your cat may choose to literally scratch this one right off the list. Most of our feline patients would rather take yet another nap than come in for their appointments. (This is in large part because of the drive: Fluffy is not a big fan of car rides!) However, proper veterinary care is absolutely crucial to your pet’s health. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Playtime!

Playing helps Fluffy stay physically fit. It will also help keep her mind sharp, and keep her happy and purring. Try to play with your furry buddy every day.

No Roaming

Keeping your furball indoors will protect her from things like cars, traffic, chemicals, weather, and predators. It will also help protect local wildlife populations! Cats kill billions of birds and other small animals every year. Keep your adorable little lion safe and sound inside!

Water

Make sure your kitty always has fresh water. In summer, you can add an ice cube to her bowl if you like. You may also want to get Fluffy a fountain. Many cats prefer drinking running water!

Purrs

Your pet’s mental and emotional health are very important to her overall well-being. Stress can really take a toll on our furry friends! Make sure that Fluffy feels loved, comfortable, safe, and pampered. Offer her lots of toys and comfy beds, and get her some kitty furniture to explore. It’s also important to pay attention to your cat, and spend time with her every day.
