Guinea Pig Care Tips

Are you looking for a pet that is small in size but big on personality? Guinea pigs—or cavies, as they are sometimes called—may be a good option for you. These little guys are super cute, and really make fun pets. Read on as a local Farmers Branch, TX vet offers some tips on keeping a Guinea pig happy.

Get A Good Cage

Guinea pigs need quite a bit of room to run and play. We recommend getting a cage that is at least 7 square feet. Choose one with a solid bottom: wire floors aren’t safe for small pets. You’ll need to add a hidey-hole, water bottle, and toys. A suitable substrate, such as aspen, is also a must. Avoid pine and cedar products, as they are toxic to little animals.

Good Food

A good diet is important for any animal, and Guinea pigs are no exception. Your pint-sized pal will need plenty of grass hay, such as Timothy hay. You can offer commercial food for breakfast and dinner. Cavies also need fresh produce. It’s important to make sure your little buddy is getting enough Vitamin C, as otherwise he or she may develop scurvy. Ask your vet for specific advice, including portion sizes, safe and unsafe foods, and suitable treats.

Chew Toys

Guinea pigs have open-rooted teeth, so they can develop painful dental issues if they don’t chew enough. This doesn’t have to cost you very much, however. You can make many suitable chew toys out of safe woods, wicker, cardboard, or paper. Look online for great DIY ideas.

Buddies

Cavies are very sociable, and are always happiest when they have friends. In fact, we recommend getting at least two. Needless to say, you should only keep same-sex furballs together, as otherwise they will breed.

Fun and Cuddles

One great thing about Guinea pigs is the fact that many of them are quite cuddly. Some of these guys even like to nap on their owners’ laps! Just be very gentle with your furball: like other small animals, cavies are easily frightened. Offering toys and treats will help win your little buddy over. You may even be able to teach your pet simple tricks, like turning in circles.
