Holiday Care for Exotic Pets

Happy Holidays! At this time of year, we see lots of adorable seasonal photos of dogs, cats, and even smaller pets, like bunnies, hamsters, and Guinea pigs. But what about exotic pets? It’s easy to find gifts and info on holiday care for Fido and Fluffy, but it isn’t as simple to find good information on seasonal care for exotic pets. We can help! Here, a Farmers Branch, TX vet discusses holiday care for exotic pets.

Many exotic pets get quite stressed out when there is a lot of noise or commotion. If you are hosting a party this year, keep your pet away from the festivities. If your animal companion has a tank that is small enough to move, put him or her in a quiet back room for the night. If your pet has a larger cage, keep the party in another room.

Pet Sitting

Are you going away for the holidays? Finding a good pet sitter for an exotic pet can be tricky. Many of our scaled buddies eat things like rats and bugs, which a lot of people aren’t going to be thrilled about handling. Even innocent mistakes—like picking a gecko up by the tail—can cause serious injuries. We strongly recommend boarding. You’ll be able to relax, knowing that your pet is in great hands!

Fido and Fluffy are very easy to shop for: toys, treats, and beds are all great and easy gifts. But what do you get for a snake or lizard? A bigger habitat would be a great option for many exotic pets. You can also get your pet a new hide box or perhaps some climbing branches. Some of our scaled friends will also enjoy a special treat. Just be sure to only offer your pet safe foods. Ask your vet for more information.

Who says exotic pets can’t get in on some holiday fun? If you have a smaller pet, you may be able to find some cute seasonal decorations that you can add to their habitat, such as an igloo hidey-hole or a little sleigh. You can also put decorations on the outside of your pet’s tank, as long as your scaled buddy can’t reach them.
